A two day tour of fun & adventure travelling through the central North Island showing you the best attractions, lush rolling farmland, forests, lakes, visiting Rotorua, the heart of New Zealands Maori culture and active geothermal zone, including erupting geysers, boiling mud & hot water pools. Once in a lifetime must do visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set, the internationally famous Waitomo Glow Worm Caves.
An opportunity to experience the best of the central North Island attractions in an action packed 2 day tour with amazing photo shots and great memories.
Day One: Auckland – Waitomo - Rotorua
7.30am: Pickup from your Auckland Hotel. We travel to Waitomo Caves passing through New Zealand’s picturesque and most productive farm land, renowned for its dairy farms and horse racing studs. New Zealand’s heartland at its best. We stop at the Otorohanga Wildlife Sanctuary Kiwi House to view our national Kiwi bird.
On arrival at Waitomo Caves we are met by our guide and descend into the caves by stairs to reach the underground river and grotto. Enjoy the famous magical boat ride under thousands of glow worms as we glide silently through the starry wonderland of the glow worm grotto and marvel at natures amazing display.
Time for lunch
We continue on to Rotorua where we explore the highlights of this famous tourist town, including the Government Gardens, Rotorua’s museum, and the architectural gem, the historic Spa Bath House, Rachel’s Pool, famous Blue Baths, a drive along the lake front past the Te Arawa Waka (canoe) and the picturesque Redwood Forest, before arriving at the Millennium Hotel or similar for an overnight stay.
Evening: This evening we take the Lakeland Queen for a full buffet Dinner Cruise on Lake Rotorua - watch the magical sunset over the lake offering stunning twilight views and photo opportunities. The perfect way to end the day.
Day 2: Rotorua – Hobbiton - Auckland
8am: Hotel Pickup before proceeding to Whakarewarewa Living Maori Village where we are met by our Maori guide who will take us on a geothermal tour and experience an authentic Living Maori Village where, for over 200 years, the Tuhourangi / Ngati Wahiao tribe has welcomed visitors onto their tribal land. Learn how the members of the tribe live on a daily basis using the natural resources to cook, bathe and heat their homes. See and hear the famous Pohutu geyser rumbling as it erupts steam and hot water up to a height of 30 meters, steam vents, boiling mud and hot water pools, as your guide explains what causes the volcanic activity and history of the area.
We also include a thrilling Cultural Performance in the heart of the village where you will see traditional Maori song and dance and the fearsome Haka.
Time for lunch
Completing a scenic drive through virgin native forest over the Mamaku Hills we arrive at the Hobbiton Movie Set and are met by our guide who explains the history and stories of the making of the Hobbit & Lord of the Rings films over a 2 hour tour of the 12 acre site following the rambling paths, inspecting the Hobbit Holes, The Mill, and the famous Green Dragon Inn to sample specially brewed beverages.
Sadly it’s the end of the tour. We return to Auckland for approx 5.30pm.
